Day 22 – Healthy Snacking!

Workouts were pretty same as usual, Chest Day at the gym in the morning, 35 minutes of cardio at the park with a few warm-up exercises, netting me 1.67 miles.

Had to go through a little training for an hour, but it was easy and mostly stuff Kat and I already knew, but the refresher and formality of it is nice for a check mark!  Most of my other tasks went well and were without incident.  Learned about the Locus of Control today in the Master Class video, which is the area of your life that you can actually control, so you can be aware of what you can control and what you can’t control in any situation.  Each of us should familiarize ourselves with our true Locus of Control, so we know what is out of our hands, and what we can actually do something about.  I actually struggled with part of this as it was attempting to put full control of everything in your hands, which excludes God.  I think there are plenty of things that we can have free will about and can maintain without our Locus of Control, but we also need to be ready for those things outside of our Locus of Control to change our path if it is in line with God’s will and our prayers to Him.  His will can always re-route us at any moment to work through something for Him.  We have to be ready for His calling, don’t we?  I think so!

Got talking with a  couple of people about something that we have initiated at our house, and got complimented on it today, and thought I’d share it with you too!  We have what we call a “Basket of Debauchery” at our house.  It is filled with all sorts of snacks: peanuts, macadamia nuts, pistachios, dried fruits of a dozen varieties (our favorites include pineapple, apple rings, cranberries, raisins, cherries, coconut fruit, and mangoes), and a few crunchy snacks like goldfish crackers, granola bars, yogurt covered pretzels, etc.  We try to keep them all relatively healthy snacks, but on occasion there is a little chocolate covered something, or a small chocolate bar that we can break a piece off of, etc.  This basket is used any time people in our family are hungry.  This includes just after a meal you can grab a crunchy and a fruity instead of getting seconds.  Snack times in between meals, same thing…grab a crunchy and a fruity.  What we try to do is get them all portioned ahead of time in little snack size zip-lock bags, but we don’t always make it that far.  What we do to begin with is put all the bulk bags into the basket so we can grab a serving any time we need one.  We do, however, stick to an actual serving as listed on the packaging, so we don’t over do it.

I received no less than two compliments on this just today!  So here it is for you and your Healthy Snacking!

Day 21 – Very Powerful Stuff!

Today, like most Sundays, are pretty busy due to church.  I think I’ve got my schedule down now that I’ve done it a few weeks in a row.  Early morning workout at 6 am, followed by breakfast and church at 9:45 am until Noon.  Go home for lunch, a touch of family time, then tuck everyone in for their after lunch naps and I’m back to the gym for my 60 minute cardio workout.  I get my Master Class video in, any reading I can do via audio book, listen to my Mindfulness tracks while driving or on breaks in between, etc.  I almost always end up in a meaningful conversation at church with someone and today was no exception.  After my afternoon cardio workout I’m back home for a few with the family before we are back to church for bible study and prayer night, then home for dinner, gratitude journal, and this blog post.  That is getting my 6 for the Deliberate Discomfort Challenge, in a nutshell.

Morning workout went relatively well for Back Day.  Hamstring Hell is up there on my least favorite exercises list, but I got through it!  Wore me out a little extra due to not sleeping well from having coughing fits half the night from the allergies (I literally have yellow patches of pollen on my driveway!)

Afternoon cardio went really well, and pretty much had the gym to myself.  Was able to clunk out 2.87 miles on the treadmill in 61 minutes.  With my cough and allergies, it is not recommended that I go outside here in Whiteville when it is cook and humid out, so I ended up at the gym on the treadmill instead of elsewhere.

Church was great, lots of talk about keeping your life God centered instead of self-centered, and helping maintain the close intimate relationship with God so that you can know His will for you and follow through with what He wants from you.  Bible study group also got some good spoilings by Kat and our oldest daughter, with some chocolate covered peanut butter balls.  Then we went into prayer night and learned about Paul’s 2nd Mission trip back into where he was stoned and left for dead.  How crazy is that?  Very, but Paul did it anyways!  Some Very Powerful Stuff!

Day 20 – A Third Of The Way There!

So not many people celebrate things like getting a third of the way through anything, but today I feel needs celebration.  I’m a full third of the way through Deliberate Discomfort!  YAY! 

This challenge has taxed me in numerous different ways, from physically wearing me out at times, to stressing me out wondering how I’m going to get everything done in a day!  All the research I’ve had to do for new-to-me exercises that I’ve never heard before, some of which have the most ridiculous names, like Mr. Spectacular (not looking forward to those next time).

All in all though, I’m feeling good!  I’m feeling much stronger, much healthier, like I’m more capable somehow because of it all.  Life is looking up because of it all.  My journey has continued health wise form the front page of our blog.  I’ve been officially diagnosed with diabetes and high triglycerides (which I already had).  I’ve got more potential problems coming, but because we were starting this program the Dr. wanted to hold off to see how I did in losing some weight and how my labs came in afterwards.  I’m hoping he says I don’t need any of the medications any more, but that may be wishful thinking on my part.  We shall see!  I know I’m working my butt off physically, and I’ve almost completely cut out carbs and simple starches like potatoes.  I splurge a little bit once a week or so and have a few tater tots or something, so I’m not denying myself anything completely, but I am making sure that I am minimizing how much I have to make sure I’m in the best possible position to not need meds from here on, if I can!

Today’s workout was Arms Day, so lots of weight work with dumbbells, some minimal floor work for the warm up and then some Flat Bench Knees to Elbows and Bench Dips, but honestly I don’t mind Arms Day…it is one of the ways I’m feeling stronger!

Cardio went pretty well, without anywhere near as much coughing as I have been doing due to my allergies, which is a victory for me!  These allergies have been hanging on almost the entire challenge and I’ve had to medicate regularly for both nasal congestion and lung congestion, and even use an inhaler because of how much gets into my lungs.  So, without coughing I was able to pull in 1.74 miles walking on a treadmill in 35 minutes.  A pretty good pace for me, so another win!

Also, completely finished my book 1984 today, so don’t even have to read any of it tomorrow!  Ready to start my next book Monday, which will be Animal Farm also by George Orwell.  After Animal Farm I plan on going back to the self-help books to see what else I can learn to do better, but it’s been a nice break and it is the first novel I’ve read in quite some time!  I’ve missed being able to read regularly.

Today was also the Valor Challenge!  Here is the information from Mission Six Zero:

As you go through the challenge, please think about SSG Robert Miller.  This Valor Challenge was recommended by our Mission Six Zero teammate, Rusty Whitt. Rusty and Rob went through basic training, airborne, and the selection phase of the Q course together and they became friends. 

Staff Sergeant Robert J. Miller distinguished himself by extraordinary acts of heroism while serving as the weapons sergeant in Special Forces Operational Detachment Alpha 3312, Special Operations Task Force 33, Combined Joint Special Operations Task Force Afghanistan, during combat operations against an armed enemy in Kunar Province, Afghanistan, on January 25th, 2008.

Devotion to duty.  An abiding sense of honor.  A profound love of country.  These were the virtues that found their ultimate expression when Rob — just 24 years old and on his second tour — met his testing point on January 25, 2008.

Rob and his team were in the remote northwest of Afghanistan.  Their mission:  clear a valley of insurgents who had been attacking Afghan forces and terrorizing villagers.  On foot, in the dark and freezing cold, the team headed over to a destroyed compound, to assess the damage and gather intelligence. 

First, it was just a single insurgent, jumping out from behind a boulder.  Then, the whole valley seemed to explode with gunfire.  Within seconds, Rob and his patrol were pinned down, with almost no cover — bullets and rocket-propelled grenades raining down from every direction.  And when enemy reinforcements poured in, the odds were overwhelming.  Rob’s small patrol of two dozen men was nearly surrounded by almost 150 insurgents.

With the enemy just feet away — some so close he could see their faces — Rob held his ground.  Despite the chaos around him, he radioed back enemy positions.  As the only Pashto speaker on his team, he organized the Afghan soldiers around him.  But the incoming fire, in the words of one soldier, was simply “astounding.”

Rob called for his team to fall back and then he did something extraordinary.  Rob moved in the other direction — toward the enemy, drawing their guns away from his team and bringing the fire of all those insurgents down upon himself.  The fighting was ferocious.  Rob continued to call out the enemy’s position.  And they could hear his weapon still firing as he provided cover for his men.  And then, over the radio, they heard his voice.  He had been hit.  But still, he kept calling out enemy positions.  Still, he kept firing.  Still, he kept throwing his grenades until Rob’s weapon fell silent.

Two of his teammates braved the bullets and rushed to Rob’s aid.  In those final moments, they were there at his side — American soldiers there for each other. The relentless fire forced them back, but they refused to leave their fallen comrade.  When reinforcements arrived, these Americans went in again — risking their lives, taking more casualties — determined to bring Rob Miller out of that valley.  And finally, after fighting that raged for hours, they did.

When the dust settled and the smoke cleared, there was no doubt Rob Miller and his team had struck a major blow against the local insurgency.  Five members of his patrol had been wounded, but his team had survived.  And one of his teammates surely spoke for all of them when he said of Rob, “I would not be alive today if not for his ultimate sacrifice.”

Staff Sgt. Miller’s selfless acts saved the lives of his seven of his ODA members and 15 Afghan soldiers. As a result of his heroic actions, the local Insurgency was dealt a crippling blow, decimating insurgent forces involved in the battle, and shattering their morale and confidence. Staff Sergeant Miller’s heroism and selflessness above and beyond the call of duty and at the cost of his own life are in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.

Day 19 – Everything Is Awesome!

Morning workout went well enough I suppose, but I can tell you that my new “least favorite” exercise is Mr. Spectaculars!  It was technically Circuit Training Day, but the first circuit after the warm up was literally 100 Mr. Spectaculars.  I, unfortunately, can not do Mr. Spectaculars completely, so I must substitute with Barbell Push Presses and Push-ups.  Seeing as I had already completed 19 push-ups for my Bodyweight Exercise of Choice, and 30 push-ups in my warm up, doing another 100 was a little tough…wore me out a bit and took me over an hour to complete my workout.  The second circuit was almost “nice” with Dumbbell Slashers, side bridges, and Bicycle Crunches (only 4 rounds).

From there got running our appointments for today, got most of my other challenge tasks handled at the park, including my cardio workout which was a 60 minute ruck with a 20 lbs. pack on.  That also wore me out a little, especially in the warmer day (although not quite as warm as yesterday).  Was able to make it to 2.2 miles using the nature trails, mixing up my routes trying to make sure I wasn’t completely across the park when 60 minutes hit.  That would force me to make it 80 or more minutes to get back to the car, and I just didn’t think I was up to it today with the 20 lbs. pack on!

Honestly, other than that, Everything Is Awesome!

Day 18 – Always An Adventure

Today’s workout, again went relatively well and was relatively easy, as it was the same as the last couple of weeks for Shoulders Day, consisting of mostly weight work, such as Push Presses, Military Seated Presses, Pullovers and Overhead Tricep Extensions!  Lots of stretching and floor exercises to go with those too!

Afternoon workout was a warm up of Squats and Lunges, then a wonderful walk for 35 minutes.  I chose to do a nature trail walk which slowed me down a little bit, but I feel I get an even better workout in when I do that sometimes.  Nice change of atmosphere from always walking the paved path at the park!  Only got in 1.4 miles when time started running out and I had to find a path back to the parking lot.  Also had to watch out for the park maintenance people both picking up downed branches and putting in fresh arrows and markings in the parking lot!  Overall a good little adventure today!

Afterwards I sat in the parking lot on a record heat day in North Carolina, made it to 85 degrees (hottest day on record for February).  Made sure the A/C was running to keep cool, and got all of my other tasks completed, including my Mindfulness Routine (now a total of 25 minutes long), my Master Class video where we are going over details of the OODA loop (mentioned in a previous post), my bible studies, and a snack!  Also got a TON of reading done, which was good because I realized I was just a little behind.  Today I got completely caught up and am even a little ahead now.  Still reading the novel 1984 by George Orwell.  Very interesting book thus far, and very well written, quite compelling in some places, and I honestly didn’t want to put it down!  It is quite the adventure too!

From there had a good conversation with my wife about Taming Life’s Chaos, our health goals and all the plans we have!  Then had to run a few more errands and had a doctor’s appointment, which are Always An Adventure!

Day 17 – Working Up A Sweat!

Today was a little easier with the morning workout, outside of push-ups that is.  I’m up to 17 push-ups (one for each day of the challenge) before I even start my warm up, which also has 30 push-ups total in it.  The rest of the routine was pretty similar to previous Wednesdays, Legs Day!  Lots of squatting, lunging, and deadlifts with various floor exercises.  I have been able to up my weight a little using 15s and 20s instead of 10s and 15s, so that is also a victory for me!

Got a nice day at the park, doing most of my other tasks for the challenge, including a bunch of reading in my book, 1984.  It’s an interesting read, intriguing view of the future from 1950, lots of nuances, which I have enjoyed from reading other classics authors, such as Dickens.  Not quite half way yet, but enjoyable book thus far.

For my afternoon cardio, had to go to the gym because it is Sprints Day!  Because I do mine on the bike, I started with a 5 minute warm up, followed by ten sprints at 0.4 miles each, with a 1 minute break in between, followed by 5 sprints at 0.2 miles each, with a 1 minute break in between.  Grand total of 8.95 miles in 34 minutes (I don’t stop pedaling while on “break” so I can keep track of distance and time for the entire workout, just slow way down on my pedaling, usually around 45 rpm instead of 85-100 for the sprints).  Worked up quite the sweat doing this, which felt good.

Otherwise things went well, got some of my reading caught up and am able to write this relatively early, not quite 8 pm yet, so that’s pretty good to!

It’s a warm one today though, so still Working Up A Sweat!

Day 16 – Thinking Again!

So today started off really well because I finally slept well, which has been rare during this Deliberate Discomfort Challenge.  My Fitbit gave me an 88 sleep score, which is the highest I’ve received since September of last year, from what I can tell, just to give you an idea!

From there I got in my morning workout routine, which took me a few because of all the new exercises and needing completely different equipment.  I found it easier to kidnap a barbell from the downstairs weight room and bring it up with me to be able to complete the rest of my workout without having to go up and down stairs in between each and every set.  The upstairs classroom at the gym has considerably more floor space to complete the floor exercises like Renegade Rows.  Did have to be a little careful with doing Renegade Rows on the padding to make sure the dumbbells don’t rotate in the middle.

Overall today was Circuit Training, but everything was different.  Took me quite some time to get it all figured out and put together, but I got there eventually.

For my cardio, went to my usual park and did some nature trail walks as my Hike/Fast Paced Walk.  Because it was nature trails instead of the paved paths it slowed me down a touch, but I still managed 2.5 miles in my 60 minutes, which felt good.  Had to have one large coughing fit where I had to sit down, because of these horrible allergies I’ve been fighting for weeks.  Feels like those are breaking up, however, so let’s hope my lungs continue to clear out!

Also, for this week I have been reading the book 1984 by George Orwell.  It’s been an interesting read, that’s for sure…as I’ve never read this classic before.  I do enjoy how it is written, and the world of Oceania is quite intriguing speculation on the concept of Big Brother as we know it today.  Looking forward to see how it pans out and finishes!

Also learned about the OODA loop today in my Master Class.  It stands for Observe, Orient, Decide, Act.  It is a process for critical thinking and action in life.  First you Observe where you are, Orient yourself within that area, Decide how to proceed, then Act on that decision.  All 4 steps are necessary, of course, to succeed in whatever it is you are attempting to do.  Makes you think a little about how reactive you can be in life and how you aren’t always thinking things through to make real decisions instead of snap decisions that may not be the best thing for you or your life, doesn’t it?

All in all it has been a thought provoking sort of day, had to run a few errands in the afternoon with 3 of the 4 children, which pretty much ended with me on edge and frustrated with the process, not how it usually goes…but it is what it is I guess.  Of course that whole experience and how I was reactive, just got me Thinking Again!

Day 15 – The Unexpected

So, today was a day I didn’t expect in a few ways…

First off, today had some really good points to it!  Morning workout was Chest day…still having some trouble with a couple of exercises because my gym does not have a flat bench upstairs, where I do all of the rest of my exercises, so I’m having to do leg lifts as an alternate lower ab workout to Flat Bench Knees to Elbows.  I put in a request for a flat bench upstairs, but I don’t know if anything will come of it.  There is a recline bench, and incline bench and an adjustable bench with a tilted seat all up there, so I’m hoping it won’t be too difficult for the gym to get one, but we’ll see.

Also, while at the park for my cardio workout, my wife pleasantly surprised me by getting some paperwork filled out that we needed done, and handling phone calls for that too!  She was impressive today with her forethought and handling of tasks, made me smile.

I also got to have an amazing hour long heart to heart with my oldest son, which really felt good.  I’ve been feeling distant from him a little lately, especially with being so busy at times between work and the Deliberate Discomfort challenge and our daily appointments.  This long heart to heart really was great, a very in depth conversation talking about great things for the future and our relationships with God…really comforting and pleasant.  One of my favorite conversations with him in a good long time.

Then we came home and got to lunch and some extra tasks while the kids took a nap, and I was able to just bust out everything else I needed to do for the challenge, and I’m writing this at 5:30 pm, which is AMAZING!  I think I’m just thrilled because, in a great way, there is just so much of The Unexpected!

Day 14 – Two Weeks Down!

Today was just a bit wild and crazy for me.  I haven’t been able to get this much done since my last attempt of this challenge, which was months ago!  I don’t know that I’ve done much different this time around. 

I was able to sleep in 1 extra hour (I’m getting pretty tired at times) to 5:30 this morning, which was in itself nice, and needed.  After that I was off to the gym, and got my morning workout completed.  It was a bunch of back exercises.  Not always my favorite, buy they do go relatively quick. 

After a few hours at church and a quick lunch, I took off to my cardio workout.  It was nice being the only person in the place again, and being able to just handle what I need, but at the same time, I also had an issue with a piece of the equipment there not saving my progress like I asked it to in order to use the restroom.  So I had to piece together my cardio from there, but got it done, none the less.

I was able to get my Master Class video watched while on the treadmill, and got some of my bible studies completed as well.  Everything else for the most part had to wait until after evening church and dinner. 

It wasn’t necessarily easy today, but I got it done, and on time!  That means I have the first Two Weeks Down.  Let’s see what week 3 brings me?

Day 13 – Allergies Suck!

So, on the overall, had a decent day.  Got my morning workout done after sleeping in a couple of hours, which was nice.  Did my Valor Challenge (more on that later), then came home and got breakfast done for the family.  Everything went fairly well there.  Morning workout was Arms day, so lots of dumb bell work, upper arms, lower arms, biceps, triceps, etc.  Still have a hard time getting the flat-bench knees to elbows going at the gym as they don’t have a flat bench available upstairs which is where I do the rest of my workout, but I’m figuring it out!

Throughout the day had a little timing issues with trying to get a special project done in the garage, along with getting all of my challenge tasks completed.  Had a great conversation with my son about his schooling and how things have been outside of his video games.  Was a nice little heart to heart.

Got the special projects completed and headed off to the gym for my afternoon cardio.  I decided that I needed to do it indoors today, because I’ve had these nasty allergies going, which is draining into my lungs as I breath, and therefore I’ve had a nasty cough for the last couple of weeks.  Every time I spend too much time in the very cold air like we had today (30s to 40s), I seem to have a much harder time breathing for a while.  It worked out in the end, because after my cardio workout I was coughing a whole lot less than usual, with my walks at the park outdoors. I’m usually a proponent for spending the time outside, and it is only because of this cough that I can’t shake that I’m trying to keep myself from failing, by getting worse and having to bow out.  I can’t have that.

This morning I did do my Valor Challenge in 17:22 this morning, which consisted of Burpees (I do a modified version of them) and 400 meter runs (also, do a modified version on the bike instead.  Our Valor Challenge this week is in honor of SGM James Sartor, U.S. Army (Green Beret).  His information from Mission Six Zero is as follows:

As you go through the challenge, please think about Sergeant Major James Sartor.  This Valor Challenge was recommended by our Mission Six Zero teammate, Jeff Adams.

Sergeant Major James Sartor, a member of the 10th Special Forces Group, died during combat operations in Faryab province, Afghanistan on Saturday, July 13, 2019. He died as a result of injures sustained when the Taliban attacked him with small arms fire during combat operations. Faryab province is located in the north west of Afghanistan. James Sartor was a member of the 2nd Battalion, 10th Special Forces Group which is based at Fort Carson, Colorado.  It was his seventh deployment.

James “Ryan” Sartor, age 40, was from Teague, Texas and was born on Sept. 23, 1978. He loved sports growing up and played football for his high school team. He joined the Army in June 2001 and was assigned to the 3rd Infantry Division as an infantryman. He completed the Special Forces Qualification Course and was assigned to 10th group in 2005.

He deployed to Iraq as an infantryman in 2002, and as a Green Beret assigned to 2nd Battalion, 10th SFG (A) in 2006, 2007, 2009 and 2010. He also deployed to Afghanistan with 10th SFG (A) in 2017 and 2019.

“We’re incredibly saddened to learn of Sgt. Maj. James ‘Ryan’ Sartor’s passing in Afghanistan. Ryan was a beloved warrior who epitomized the quiet professional,” said Col. Brian R. Rauen, commander of 10th Group. “He led his soldiers from the front and his presence will be terribly missed.”

Sartor’s awards and decorations include the Bronze Star Medal with three oak leaf clusters, Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Joint Service Commendation Medal, Army Commendation Medal with three oak leaf clusters, Army Achievement Medal, Presidential Unit Citation Award, Joint Meritorious Unit Award, Valorous Unit Award with two oak leaf clusters, Meritorious Unit Citation with one oak leaf cluster and National Defense Service Medal, among others. His posthumous awards include the Purple Heart Medal and Bronze Star Medal.


Rest of my day has come together nicely, although a little later than I would have liked.  Sometimes that just the way the ball bounces though, right?  What I do know, is that Allergies Suck!
